Directed Microbial Evolution | Continuous Culture | GM3 Technology | Synthetic Biology



About the Platform 

Genoscope (CEA sequencing center for environmental genomics) has installed a platform of directed evolution of microbial strains based on the patented GM3 continuous culture technology. A series of GM3 automates are available enabling long term strain adaptations to obtain deviated phenotypes potentially interesting for scientific and industrial purposes.

Possible strain developments include adaptation to alternative nutritional elements and growth media, temperature and pH optima. Microbial cells can be evolved to degrade chemical wastes or to produce more efficiently useful compounds through foreign synthetic pathways implemented in fermenter strains.


  • -  evolution in continuous culture of microbial strains or consortia, with the following limitations:
    - non-pathogenic organisms
    - aerobic growth

    - generation time not higher than 8 hours
    - axenic growth (no filament formation)
    - growth in aqeous media, all ingredients dissolved - no extreme growth conditions (pH, temperature)

  • -  proposition of an appropriate continuous culture regime by the Genoscope staff; microorganisms and medium formulation must be provided by the platform user
    - evolution time span will be limited to six month

    - modalities of strain delivery to be defined at the end of the evolution
