Introduction to IBISBA

Industrial Biotechnology is the application of biological systems (enzyme, microorganisms) for industrial purposes and relies on the creation of synergy between biology and chemical engineering. In particular, in Industrial Biotechnology, Synthetic Biology is considered a real game-changer, but its full potential is yet to be unleashed. This is exactly what IBISBA aims to do providing translational research in industrial biotech.

Improvement of riboflavin bioproduction by 13C isotopic profiling

Riboflavin, also known as vitamin B, is produced by plants and microorganisms, but it is essential for animals and humans. Therefore it is mainly used as a food and feed additive. Initially produced by chemical processes it is now an exclusive biotechnological production. 13C isotopic profiling helps to better understand riboflavin production leading to higher yield.

Development of mevalonate pathway analysis by LC-HMRS

Isoprenoids are one of the most abundant and diverse families of biological molecules, which are involved in a wide range of physiological processes in plants and animals, including strong biological activities against human diseases. The mevalonate pathway is an essential metabolic pathway to produce isoprenoids in yeast. Comprehensive understanding of the operation and regulation of isoprenoids biosynthesis requires the development of a framework for functional analysis of the mevalonate pathway.

Transcriptome sequencing by Ion Torrent Next-Generation Sequencing: application to Pichia pastoris

Transcriptomes can be studied using high-throughput technologies such as Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS). Ion Torrent NGS is a sequencing method based on the detection of hydrogen ions and pH variations. Ion Torrent NGS helps identify the regulation and operation of novel pathways designed with engineered promoters in strains of Pichia pastoris that are used to improve industrial protein production.

De novo sequencing and assembly of complex genomes

Genome sequencing is the process of determining the complete DNA sequence of a target organism in order to understand gene functions and the proteins they encode (e.g. disease-resistant genes). De novo sequencing and assembly consist of breaking up a genome into short nucleotide sequences and putting them back together to recreate the original DNA sequence without the use of a reference genome.

Proteomics strategies to characterise recombinant proteins and to study the response of biotechnological-relevant organisms to perturbations

Proteomics is the large-scale study of proteins and investigates how these are involved in metabolic pathways or molecular processes. Proteomics is used to verify the amino acid sequence of recombinant proteins and to study the response of biotechnological-relevant organisms to perturbations.
