France Expected to Spearhead ERIC STEP 1 Application Process in 2025

The IBISBA consortium made significant headway toward establishing a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) by 2025.

The Steering Committee approved the current version of the Technology and Services (T&S) framework, a foundational component of the ERIC application, collaboratively developed by national nodes. This document will continue to evolve in the coming phases of the application process, ensuring alignment with emerging opportunities for collaboration.

To meet ERIC requirements, IBISBA worked to secure Letters of Intent (LoIs) from at least five countries by the end of 2024. This effort, coordinated by the French Ministry, involved close collaboration between national nodes and their respective governments to finalise the statutes. Clear guidance on signatory authority ensured that LoIs met both national practices and ministry-level standards.

Several national nodes reported notable progress on critical milestones. Italy has successfully used the funding to expand access to its infrastructure, while Germany hosted a stakeholder workshop in December to solidify node membership and funding strategies. Belgium and Finland confirmed their timelines for LoI submission, while the UK’s recent observer status highlights the growing interest in IBISBA’s mission. The Netherlands is exploring including industry partners within its national node, and Greece is directing grants toward infrastructure enhancements.

Looking ahead, with statutes formalised, France is expected to spearhead the next step of the process in 2025. The Steering Committee has proposed more frequent meetings to maintain momentum and facilitate decision-making. A key face-to-face Legal Working Group meeting is scheduled for January in Brussels, bringing together policymakers, researchers, and representatives from scientific platforms to address critical legal and operational procedures.
